What is Acuneedling?

Acuneedling is simply acupuncture administered by a Midwife during pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum period. Acuneedling is a safe, gentle and effective treatment which has been used within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years.

I first discovered this treatment in my second pregnancy when I was suffering with headaches and migraines. After just a couple of treatments, I regained my quality of life back and was able to enjoy my pregnancy again. Since then I have become a big advocate of acupuncture and I’m so grateful and excited to be able to offer it to you.

Debra Betts, who is a world-renowned Acupuncturist specialising in pregnancy care, first brought acupuncture into the Midwifery sphere in 1997. She developed the course ‘Acuneedling for Midwives’ which was brought to Australia and is now taught by Acupuncturist and Researcher Dr Kate Levett and Midwife Heidi Williams. The course is designed specifically to address the specialised scope of practice of Midwives, to optimise the care provided to women during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

As an Acuneedling Midwife there are several points and techniques I can use to assist with many of the events which may occur across the birthing continuum. Acuneedling may assist with:

  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Breech baby (as well as pre/post ECV)
  • Pre-birth preparation
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Labour activation
  • Pregnancy loss
  • Posterior position
  • Retained placenta
  • Constipation
  • Haemorrhoids/Varicosities
  • Insomnia
  • Itching
  • Thrush
  • Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
  • Pregnancy hypertension
  • Threatened miscarriage
  • Back/Hip/Symphysitis pain and Sciatica
  • Odema
  • Anaemia
  • Postnatal recovery
  • Mastitis
  • Milk let-down
  • Afterbirth pains

An Acuneedling appointment with me will involve an initial discussion where we can chat about your medical history, your pregnancy and any concerns or ailments you may be experiencing. The treatment itself is approximately 20 mins of ‘needles in’ time during which you will sit or lay comfortably and relax. We may also use acupressure (pressure on the points – no needles), moxibustion, massage and cupping during your appointment – depending on what you need.

If you have any questions about this treatment or would like to book in for a session, then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Many blessings,

Carly
